MEDITATION

TAKE TIME TO GO INWARD

I often hear, “I can’t meditate because I cannot quiet my mind.”

The first thing that is required to meditate is to simply begin. Meditation calls you. As you sit, you will want to sit more. It may not happen all at once, but when you get to that space of quietude, a switch occurs. We take the time to eat right, exercise, and wash our bodies.

Our mind needs to be taken care of too. Meditation is an energy shower for the mind. I like to use the analogy of a jar of clear water. Your mind is that water. If you add dirt and shake, you now have dirty, foggy water, a metaphor for a cluttered mind. But, when you allow the water to still, the dirt and debris settle at the bottom and the water clears. This represents your clear mind. Meditation clears the busyness of your thoughts, bringing you to a space of peace.

Meditation: Take a Risk on You

Meditation is about finding internal peace.

When you can “still your mind” to a point of receptivity, you begin to see the unseen, and hear the unheard.

In that moment, the stress of the world dissolves, you completely let go, and a sense of inner clarity comes.

Getting Started

It doesn’t have to be complicated—it can be as simple as taking one conscious breath. Here are some benefits you can expect to receive from your practice (although there are many other reasons to meditate, as well.)

  • Relaxation

  • Stress Reduction

  • Happiness

  • Peace

  • Tranquility

  • Clarity

  • Focus

Meditation Positions

  • Seated Meditation - Simply sit. Comfort is the key, if your body cannot be comfortable, your mind cannot relax.

  • Sit in a Chair - Spine straight, feet firmly planted on the floor.

  • Seated on the Floor Crossed-Legged - You want your knees below your hips.

Prop yourself up with a cushion. If your knees are at your hip height, you might be better off in a chair. You can choose to support your knees with pillows or blocks. The most important thing is to have a straight spine so your breath can be fluid.

  • Kneeling in a Seated Position - Some people prefer this position as it allows their spine to be straighter.

  • Lying Down - Last option, it is the most relaxed and you may fall asleep. So if you can try the others first it allows the mind to be more alert in your practice.
